Rengay wins HPNC Award

The following rengay was composed by Michael Dylan Welch, Tanya McDonald, and Billie Dee on 10/18/2009 in Seabeck, Washington after the annual Seabeck Haiku Getaway Weekend Retreat. The three of us took an afternoon drive through the forest north of the conference grounds to Scenic Beach State Park, followed by supper at Barbie's Seabeck Bay Cafe. We edited the poem during our ferry ride back to Seattle. A wonderful day we are celebrating again with our Third-Place winning in the 2010 Haiku Poets of Northern California rengay contest. The poem will be published in HPNC's journal Mariposa, 2011.

Haiku Anthology reading in San Diego

The Southern California Haiku Study Group presents a reading of their 2010 haiku anthology, An Island of Egrets, this Saturday, October 9th at 2 p.m. at The Ink Spot, 710 13th Street, Suite 210, San Diego, CA. A no-host dinner will follow (more details at the bottom of this announcement).

Edited by Billie Dee, the anthology is a 124-page perfect-bound volume of work by 65 haiku poets throughout Southern California, including a number of San Diego writers. Of particular note is a bilingual Spanish-English selection of haiku by well-known border-region authors.

This collection emphasizes our unique climate and geography, our rich cultural diversity, and embraces the broad range of experience of our contributing poets. Books will be available for sale at the reading.

I am very pleased to announce that an island of egrets... the 2010 Southern California Haiku Study group Anthology is complete and ready to go to the printer. From our first beautiful hand-made 2001 edition with eight founding haijin, we have grown to a volume of 65 poets. Our new book will be perfect-bound with a full-color heavy-stock cover, featuring 267 poems, including a fine selection of regional Spanish Language haiku with English translations. This collection emphasizes our unique climate and geography, our rich cultural diversity, and embraces the broad range of experience of our contributing haijin. I think you will be very pleased with the superb quality of work in this, our 10th Anniversary Edition!

It’s a still night, TV off, crickets, grandkids out of my hair, dog’s passed out. The third bourbon kicks in. I work the mood for memories… all the false starts… false mates… steamy years of cultivated urbanity… that small jazz club on 4th Street… packed with Saturday-nighters, where I’m grooving and flirting, until the jukebox dies and the musicians step up to the platform, lead off with Lazy Bird; as the audience goes silent, sweating and riveted to each note; as the gleam of the saxophone fills the air with a pulsing mystery, and my love of jazz and crowded rooms expands, holds me there for that one-hour set; as the night waits outside to fold me back into the dark wings of the city.

I sit a while. The ice melts in my glass. I study the flea-bitten arm of the recliner, rise and pick a paperback from the pile on the floor, coyotes howling in the canyon near the small desert town I have come to.

The back trellis is covered with hot pink bloom and the neighbor’s tabby has nested in the garden shed. I’m listening to the hammer of water pipes, a hollow ring filling the galvanized tub, when my grandfather backs in through the screen door. His tall rubber boots leave tracks on the laundry linoleum. There’s the smell of a gunnysack, and another smell I can’t identify – something bitter, something wet.

From One-line Poems to One-line Haiku

A seminal essay from the late William J. Higginson on the 1-liner was published in SimplyHaiku, Fall 2004. He defines four basic types, the latter being more a failure than a class of the genre:

One-Stroke Haiku. Those that seem to drive the reader instantly from one end to the other, without a pause for reflection or even noticing the grammar involved.
Classical-Style One-Line Haiku. Those that have a classic haiku rhythm, dividing easily into three phrases, often with the middle one longer, as do traditional Japanese and three-line haiku in other languages, but which may benefit from being read all at once—as the authors apparently intend. I consider these borderline cases between one-stroke haiku and the following group, but notice that the classical style allows for more play with the internal rhythms of a haiku than may usually be found in a three-line poem.
Multiple-Meaning One-Line Haiku. Those that may have a classic haiku rhythm, but which also offer the reader a number of syntactic elements, allowing for different interpretations of the poem according to how the reader decides to follow the poem's movement.
Multi-Line Haiku Written on One Line. Those that include a marked stop or pause, and which therefore are not true one-line haiku in my sense of the term. They usually include extra space between two or more sections, or punctuation marking a grammatical shift, or some other substitute for a line-break.

My fountain pen runs dry, and I merge with the sounds of early evening: the rasp of the green grocer's shutter chain, the dopplered crescendo-decrescendo of a minibus full of schoolgirls, an iPod leaking one ear-bud of Die Zauberflote. . . an hour slips by.

I'm late. In the lift to the lobby, the ticket in my pocket feels brittle, remote. I follow my feet through the old center of the city. . . down the damp corridors of patience, along the boulevards of longing and abundance, through the night's high colonnaded arias. . . until, soundlessly, I enter that cathedral of solitary oneness, in love with the dreaming world that rolls toward me like a golden ball.

Surprise!

The moonflower, Ipomoea alba, is a kigo for late spring / early summer. Its large, fragrant, round blossoms are revealed after dusk in a dramatically rapid fashion, often seeming to almost spring open.

Related to the morning glory, it is native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of North and South America. The large 4-5 inch flowers range in color from white to pink, and are often cultivated as a garden ornamental. In regions like Florida, it can become an invasive twining pest, choking out other plants.

The pre-Colombian Mesoamericans civilizations used the high sulfur content of the moonflower plant to vulcanize latex from the Catilla elastica tree into rubber balls used in arena sports.

Higginson on kigo and tradition

The rationale behind season words is tradition, not personal or local experience. It makes sense to add certain items to a season word list according to local custom, such as holidays, unique cultural features, and particular weather phenomena or creature-behaviors unique to a specific region, provided they are included at times when poets have in fact noticed them and writen about them. But this is not always the case for phenomena of more or less universal experience. ...

...The overriding factor here is that, unless one is in a very distinctly different climatic zone than mid-temperate central Japan, on which the Japanese saijiki is nominally based, and the phenomenon in question is already recorded in a common Japanese saijiki, then *millions of poets* already relate to it that way.

The Rengay Form

The rengay is to renga (and other collaborative verse) as the nosegay is to a large wreath of flowers - small, intimate, accessible, and typically lighthearted and joyous.

The North American rengay was invented in 1992 by Garry Gay (ren-Gay). Unlike renga, there are only a few rules:

six haiku verses written by two or more poets;
verses alternate between 3-lines and 2-lines;
each verse should be an independent haiku (including the 2-line verses), though this is the least stringent requirement;
a theme should be followed, but without the tight link and shift patterns in traditional renga.

Recently, 6-person rengay have appeared in such journals as Sketchbook.

From conversations with Garry, I know that once having given birth to this new genre he is happy enough to watch its form evolve and become enriched by the imaginations of those who have taken it up. Found at the Farmers' Almanac site:

• Full Wolf Moon - January Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January's full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

• Full Snow Moon - February Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

• Full Worm - March Moon As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

• Full Pink Moon - April This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

• Full Flower Moon - May In most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon.

• Full Strawberry Moon - June This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon. Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June . . . so the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry!

• The Full Buck Moon - July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month's Moon was the Full Hay Moon.

• Full Sturgeon Moon - August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

• Full Harvest Moon - September This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering.

• Full Hunter's Moon - October With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it is time to hunt. Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can easily see fox and the animals which have come out to glean.

• Full Beaver Moon - November This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

• The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon - December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

The 'kake kotoba' or pivot word is a word or part of a word employed in two senses, or, very rarely, in three, one relating to what precedes, the other to what follows. It is a device not unknown to late Latin and it turns up now and then in English humor andf requently in James Joyce's "Finnegan's Wake." HaikuOz, the journal of the Australian Haiku Society, announces a new international biannual haiku journal Chrysanthemum. Gabi Greve is one of these editors and will be translating English language submissions into German (Thank you Gabi san!) The listed URL does not work yet (site under construction).

Chrysanthemum is an international internet magazine that will appear twice a year, and will showcase previously unpublished Haiku/Senryû, Tanka, Haibun, Essays and Interviews in German and English. Haiku/Senryû submitted in English will be translated into German, if not already accompanied by a German translation, which is welcome but not required. Tanka, Haibun, Essays and Interviews will appear only in their original language. Submissions in languages other than German or English are also welcome as long as as they are accompanied by a translation into German or English.
Chrysanthemum welcomes work based both on traditional values as well as modern, innovative contributions in form and content, although there will be a special focus on innovative work of quality. Chrysanthemum hopes to achieve a connection between the heritage of the genre and the development and adaption in countries outside Japan.

Tsurayuki's words, written over a thousand years ago, are the first description by a Japanese of waka. The word is made up of two parts: wa meaning 'Japanese' and ka meaning 'poem' or 'song'. It was probably coined at about the time Tsurayuki was writing as a way to distinguish the poetry written by the Japanese in their own language from that they read and wrote in Chinese - the source of much of Japan's poetic inspiration.

To collect the dew on the chrysanthemum petals and drink it would bring you long life (chooju).… As an auspicious symbol of long life (kisshoo monyoo) the chrysanthemum was used for many decoration, on embroydered kimono and as sweets (wagashi). The Chinese boy Kikujidoo drank the dew of the chrysanthemum and lived to gain immortality without ageing, or rather to the ripe age of 800 years. This legend was later incorporated into a famous Noh drama.

Our kukai has two divisions each month, called the "Kigo" and "Free Format" sections. In each section a topic word or phrase will be provided, and poems are to be composed using that topic word or phrase. In the "kigo" section, the word assigned will be a "kigo" -- a "season word" -- and is intended to be used in a way representing the "season" of that kigo. So, if the kigo was "cicada", each submitted poem must include the word "cicada". Unless specifically stated, the plural form of the word is also allowed. In the free format section, the assigned word will not necessarily be a "seasonal" word, and the poet is free to either place the topic word in the season of his choice, or to write a season-neutral poem that includes the topic word.

BLOGGERbeta Glitch Fixes

I’ve been finding some nasty little glitches with the new BLOGGERbeta version (well, it is beta, after all)

Logging in from google is a little tricky. Use your original username and password. You will be directed to another log in page, which should show your email address as the username (if not, enter it), then retype your password. That should do the trick.
Clicking on the little “B” in the upper left corner of the mast heading is not working well on my blog, so it’s hard to get to Dashboard from the blog page. Here’s a go-around: scroll down and click on your VIEW MY COMPLETE PROFILE link, which will take you to your profile page. There is a big Blogger banner at the top of that page. Click on the logo and it will take you to Dashboard. If it doesn’t, it means you’re not signed in (see above).

The compose post form has a few problems, especially with leading and line break commands, as well as unmatched tags (especially "A href..." "/A" ). You might need to scan the code and edit.
The text size drop-down is finicky. Say you switch from NORMAL (default) to SMALL. If you change your mind, highlight the text, re-select SMALL (or whatever size you are trying to change from), then select the new size.
This is not a very powerful HTML compiler, but if you know basic commands you can do a lot of adjusting in the EDIT HTML mode. If you use FrontPage, or some similar program, write your post there, formatting as you usually do, then copy the HTML and paste to the Blogger form.
Indenting go-around: use periods, then highlight and change color to the same as your background. A white background makes this easy; otherwise, check the source code for your layout and retrieve your background color code there. Same for controlling "BR" and "P" commands -- if you don't want to scan code, use a period to hold line breaks.
My HTML literacy leaves a lot to be desired, so this is really a guide for the normal "compleate idiot" like myself. If you find other go-arounds, please let me know .

Noted in the World Haiku Review archives:

Toward the Starry Sky: the haiku of Hashimoto Takako (1899 - 1963) by Debra Woolard Bender with Eiko Yachimoto, from a series on women poets of Japan.

An excerpt:

hoshizora e mise yori ringo afure ori

From the grocer's, a heap of apples
overflows to the starry sky.

Apples
.....from the grocer's heap tumble
........................... ...into starry skies.

This successful and famous haiku has been highly praised and loved ever since Takako composed it in 1947. A heap of red apples placed at the storefront, sparkling under incandescent lights relate, on a symphonic scale, to a myriad stars. Even though apples were a popular symbol of hope in the post-war chaos and hunger, Takako's clarity is reminiscent of Miyazawa Kenji with his hard and lofty imagism. As in the firefly haiku, her deeply suppressed boyishness can be sensed here, too, and her inner child appears to have survived. In her mature womanhood, she would write many sensual, or even sexy haiku which some call "ecstasy haiku"

The article and companion translations are highly recommended.

Elfont, has written the text for the book, including a number of cinquains, some single stanza and a few multiple stanza, to accompany the photographs. ...in general, the cinquains in this book follow the simplest cinquain form, with occasional lapses, but are either pedestrian descriptions of the photographs or rather stilted flights of fancy....
