TANKA Published 2026

haikuKATHA

#52 February 2026

        chestnut moon
        above a frozen lake
        each stroke
        of the white owl's wings
        measuring silence

#53 Match 2026

       first mosquito
       the tinge of remorse
        in the crimson
        smear on my bare arm,
                                    and yet . . .

#54 April 2026

        boots and lies
        Hellfire missiles
        still
        the indigo mountain
        the fragile pinks of dawn

Ribbons

22.1, spring/summer 2026

        after the auction . . .
        strips of moonlight
        sifting
        through the empty corncrib
        behind our weathered barn

TANKA Published 2025

Ribbons (journal of the Tanka Society of America)

21.1, spring/summer 2025

        expecting
        a bumper crop
        of zucchini
I make a list of neighbors
        who gift Xmas fruitcake

21.2, fall/winter 2025

        a loon calls
        as thunderheads move in
        Dad steadies
        the boat with both oars
        for my last overhand cast

Onions in Moonlight
(2025 Tanka Society of America Members' Anthology)

        dry thistles
        chatter in the wind
        remembering
        our last conversation,
        what we let unsaid

#40, February 2025

        reading
        your goodbye letter . . .
        the time
        it takes a single cloud
        to drift across the lake

        the hour
        between birdsong
        and sunrise
                just me and this monkey-mind
               pretending to meditate

#41, March 2025

        enough rain
        to rinse the windowsills
        but not to lift
                    these memories
                    this yearning

        fresh powder
        as dawn sneaks its way
        through the chill
        roadrunner tracks stitching
                       shadows together

#42 April 2025

        from this pass
        overlooking Las Vegas
               the new moon
               lost in an arched swath
               of star-blistered sky

        in that lapse
        between moonset and sunrise
                      the muse arrives
                      in her pink bunny slippers
                      uncaffeinated, hair wild

        his face dims
        with each passing year
        . . . and still
        that rich baritone voice
        sings in my midnight mind

 #44, June 2025

        counting stars . . .
        wondering, wondering how
        a trillion neutrinos
        just passed through me
        without an ouch

#45, July 2025

        morning sun
        and the auburn notes
in your dark hair. . .
        a wallet-worn snapshot
        of us among the lilacs

48, October 2025

        after the storm
        this pink-cheeked dawn . . .
        hopeful
        as a nest of smiling
        matryoshkas

TANKA Published 2024

 haikuKATHA

#27 January 2025

        the Aegean
        a writhing swath of blue
        below the bluffs …
        so potent, this reverie
        of an old summer romance

        breaking dawn . . .
        on our anniversary
        I remove
        the two wedding rings
        I’ve worn since your passing

#28 February 2024

        old pin oak
        the last of the fledglings
        takes wing
        I wonder how many springs
                              are left for me

        a hummingbird
        whirs among the aloes
                  remembering
                  your turquoise eyes
                  but not your name

Ribbons (journal of the Tanka Society of America)

20.1, spring/summer 2024

        twilight's
        lavender shadows . . .
        this hour
        in a pine-scented breeze
        singing with crickets

20.2, fall/winter 2024

        snipping herbs at dawn
        a few pewter clouds drift
        between
        streaks of pink and gold,
        stands of rooster song

COLLABORATIVE TANKA SEQUENCE: mnemosyne

mnemosyne
Billie Dee and Kathryn J. Stevens
hail ping
on a galvanized roof
the woodshed
perfumed with yellow pine and packrat nest windborne the woody essence of Rose of Sharon suddenly she’s with me the sister lost long ago the gleam of her beaded evening clutch             still, faintly             that old familiar scent—             Shalimar and Lucky Strikes dry lips brush the nape of my neck a whiff of cocoa on his breath an old bedtime story
